As a world-renowned industrialist and philanthropist, Bill Gates, the co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has a very tight daily schedule. His most recent travel destination was China. Just a few days before Bill Gates made a visit to China, the reporter conducted an exclusive interview with him at the headquarters of the Gates Foundation in Seattle, Washington.
Q: I heard that you are about to visit China. Remember that your first visit to China was in 1994. What is your impression of China?
A: Every time I go to China, I can feel the rapid development of China, whether it is building that rises or I see people or technological innovation. It is an exciting thing to visit China often and witness the rapid development of China.
Q: During the past years, you have visited China many times. What do you think is the biggest change in China?
A: I want to say two things. The first is that China has created a miracle for development, hundreds of millions of people have escaped poverty, the infrastructure has been comprehensively improved, and the world's top universities have been built. The speed is amazing. Almost every year people are saying, "China's development must reach its peak." Then after a few years, they shouted that "now they have reached the top"... Of course, there are still many challenges facing China today, but China is still Development is still improving people’s living standards. This is very compelling. Second, China’s role on the world stage has become increasingly important. Although the solution to poverty in the country is still among the top issues, China’s role in promoting global development has continued to grow – it has joined the World Trade Organization; it has made great commitments to Africa’s development, including support in the economy and partnerships; it has developed in the region. At the level, the "Belt and Road Initiative" has promoted cooperation among nations and mutual economic benefits. All of these are exciting changes.
Q: What is the strategic focus of the Gates Foundation in China? How do you view China's role in global development and governance?
Answer: The Gates Foundation's work in China is divided into two levels. The first is to help China cope with domestic challenges, such as HIV and TB prevention and tobacco control. The second is through the partnership established between China, other developing countries, and foundations to find ways to work together. At the same time, China's strengths, such as livestock and poultry vaccines and rice cultivation, will be used to help other developing countries. There are many examples in this regard. For example, in Ethiopia, we are working with the China-Africa Development Fund to fund local animal vaccine projects.
Commitment to help the rest of the world is particularly important. If the United States severely reduces foreign aid, I will be particularly disappointed. It is gratifying that China’s success based on its own development is participating in global development in a more unique way. I am very pleased to see that China has played a leading role in this field. For example, at the 2015 Johannesburg Summit of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum, China promised to provide 60 billion U.S. dollars in financial support to Africa. This is a realistic reflection of China’s promotion of leadership in promoting global development.
In many areas, China has accumulated a large number of successful experiences that can be shared, such as the development of agriculture and manufacturing. China can help the world accelerate its progress.
Q: As a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist, you have made a lot of contributions to the exchanges and cooperation between China and the United States. How do you see the role of business cooperation in Sino-U.S. relations?
A: I think business cooperation is a top priority. We cannot rely solely on intergovernmental dialogue. We need communication between the business community and the business community, between the people and the people, and student exchanges. We need to maintain the depth and breadth of communication between the United States and China.
Q: For many people, your life experience is legendary. What do you personally think is the biggest achievement in your work and life?
A: I feel super lucky. The area in which I live is part of the digital revolution of continuous change, and I can experience the magic of software, the Internet, computers, and mobile phones. I personally like reading and studying. And there are always a lot of new things around us (worthy to study), such as the current extremely popular artificial intelligence. Almost all top companies and universities have made rapid progress in this area.
