Reuse of salt caves to build compressed air storage power station

Recently commissioned by the National Energy Administration, the General Electric Power Planning and Design Institute organized a demonstration meeting in Beijing on the “Technical Program for the National Demonstration Project of the Zhongtan Jintan Salt Hole Compressed Air Smart Grid Energy Storage System”. The project was jointly declared by Tsinghua University and Zhongyan Jintan Company and evaluated by the North China Electric Power Design Institute. The project aims to build the world's first 50MW/200MWh non-combustion-compressed compressed air energy storage power station using underground salt caverns .

The project demonstration expert group consists of 13 experts from 7 units including State Grid, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Electric Power Planning and Design Institute, China Electric Power Research Institute , Shangqi Group and PetroChina , including 3 academicians Huang Qili, He Yaling and Chen Weijiang. Sun Rui, Zhu Jun, Guo Xiaoke and other three design masters, Academician Huang Qili served as the expert leader. Relevant leaders and experts from the National Energy Administration, Jiangsu Provincial Energy Bureau, Zhongyan Jintan Company, North China Electric Power Design Institute, Tsinghua University, and Chinese Academy of Sciences attended the meeting.

The salt cave is the mine cave left after the salt mine is mined. It is huge and well sealed. The use of water-soluble mining methods will form underground caves after mining in thicker salt layers or salt domes. The salt under high temperature and high pressure has the characteristics of automatic healing under crack conditions. After a period of time, the underground salt caves become a good seal. A repository for storing oil, natural gas, and related products.

Reporters learned from Power Planning and Design Institute, Tsinghua University developed this project intends to adopt a non-staged combustion compressed air energy storage power generation technology, building a set of compressed air energy storage system based on 50MW project cavern in Jiangsu Province Jintan District. The air is compressed in the electricity low valley period and stored in the salt cavern, and the heat of compression generated during the compression process is collected and stored ; at the peak of the electricity consumption, the compressed air is heated by the stored heat energy and then enters the turboexpander to generate electricity for storage. There is no fuel consumption in the whole process of power generation.

The expert group listened carefully to the project technical plan report and feasibility study report, and conducted detailed and in-depth discussions on key technologies, integration construction and organization and implementation in the project. The expert group agreed that the project has the following three important advantages:

First of all, the salt cavern compressed air energy storage power station has long service life, reasonable cost and good economy. The system energy storage efficiency reaches 58.2% , which is the international advanced level. The key equipments of the system are made in China and can be highly implemented.

Secondly, China's salt cave resources are abundant and widely distributed. Therefore, the salt cavern compressed air energy storage power station can well meet the peak demand of renewable energy in the north and west regions and the eastern load region.

Finally, the storage of compressed air in salt caves is of great significance to promote the development of large-scale physical energy storage technology and equipment in China, and supports the rapid development of China's smart grid.

In view of the good demonstration significance and promotion prospects of the project, the expert group recommended that the National Energy Administration approve the project as soon as possible. At the meeting, the National Energy Administration fully affirmed the technical proposal of the project, indicating that it will continue to support the research and development of compressed air energy storage technology and accelerate the demonstration work of the salt cavern compressed air energy storage power station.
