Toyota will present a concept car, the Sora Fuel Cell Bus, at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show. The bus is expected to be put into production in 2018, of which more than 100 will be used in Tokyo metropolitan area before the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. "Sora" refers to Sky, Ocean, River, and Air, powered by Toyota's fuel cell system developed for future fuel cell vehicles.
The Sora fuel cell bus's powertrain includes two 114kW fuel cell stacks and dual motor drives, with 113kW of power and 355Nm of maximum torque. There is also a fairly small nickel-metal hydride battery (NiMH) battery and 10 hydrogen tanks with a total capacity of 600 liters. In addition to its powertrain, the Sora fuel cell bus can also output power in an emergency or disaster, providing a maximum output of 9 kW, and a total supply of 235 kWh at full fuel.
The Sora fuel cell bus can accommodate up to 79 passengers, 22 seated in the seats and 56 standing passengers and one driver. The Sora has a body length of 10,525 mm, a width of 2,490 mm and a height of 3,340 mm. Its interior design is designed to meet the needs of different numbers of passengers. Horizontal seats in Sora buses can be folded to provide space for a stroller or wheelchair.
From a technical point of view, Toyota Sora has peripheral monitoring, acceleration control, automatic arrival control, and vehicle-to-outside communication applications. Perimeter monitoring uses eight high-definition cameras inside and outside Sora to detect pedestrians, bicycles, and other obstacles to alert drivers through sound and images.
Acceleration control can suppress sudden stop acceleration, and because there is no shift in the Sora fuel cell bus, driveline traction can also be eliminated. Automatic access to the control system makes it easier to get in and out of the car, and automatically arrives at the control system so that the bus is turned from within 10 cm of the stop to 3-6 cm from the edge of the stop. This will improve passengers' boarding experience, especially for those who push baby carriages or wheelchairs.
Finally, Toyota Sora uses ITS Connect, a vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication system, to help support safe driving.
