The University of Washington has developed ultra-thin LEDs with a thickness of only 3 atoms.

Researchers at the University of Washington have announced the development of LEDs with a thickness of three atoms, which is "thin to the limit." The material is produced by using a new type of LED with tungsten-joint selenide as a raw material and separating them in a similar manner to monoatomic graphene. Researchers are now exploring a more convenient way to make this semiconductor material.

They published this research paper in "Nature Nanotechnology" last week. Xu Xiaodong (XiaodongXu), a co-author of the paper, said in a statement that the new LED is only three atoms thick, which is the traditional LED ten. To one-twentieth, this gives it more potential uses.

The ultra-thin features make this new LED foldable, so it can be used in soft and wearable electronics in the future. At the same time, the optical signal transmission brought by such LEDs is expected to replace the electrical signal transmission in some microchips, so that the equipment operates at a lower temperature and high efficiency.
