Cypress Semiconductor Corporation has announced a new EZ-Color design for high-brightness LED smart lighting systems. The EZ-Color solution now includes a driver for the DMX512 protocol, enabling designers to create an entire intelligent lighting network faster and easier without coding.
The EZ-Color series of high-brightness LED controllers in combination with PSoC Express, the industry's first integrated design solution for integrated visual design tools including architectural lighting, general signage lighting, entertainment lighting and more. The solution only requires the designer to choose a high-brightness LED part number, select temperature or optical feedback and select colors, including white light.
Gopal Garg, managing director of Cypress Semiconductor's EZ-Color business unit, said the DMX512 protocol is widely used to provide more flexibility for lighting designers, and support for this protocol simplifies EZ-Color design.
In order to provide consistent color, current LED designs require a series of complex calculations. At present, HBLED engineers face two biggest problems. One is to consider the difference in LED performance specifications of different manufacturing bins; the other is to reduce the performance of LEDs at different temperatures (such as light output, wavelength, etc.). With PSoCExpress, designers only need to choose colors from the color gamut of the screen. Pre-installed production code specifications and temperature feedback algorithms are automatically applied to the selected design and programmed into the EZ-Color controller. For complex designs, this can save weeks or even months of design time.
The EZ-Color controller not only has the advantage of being easy to design, but also supports up to 16 LED channels. In comparison, competing products can only support four to five channels. Supporting more channels means saving dozens or even hundreds of controllers in very large designs, reducing design complexity, power consumption, and board space. The EZ-Color controller also features Cypress's patent-pending PrISMTM (High-Precision Illumination Signal Modulation) technology. PrISM modulation technology greatly reduces low frequency flicker and radiated electromagnetic interference, a common problem in HB LED design. Designers also have the flexibility to add more features to the EZ-Color controller, such as battery charging, motor control, and more.
The CY3261A-RGB evaluation kit supports the EZ-Color family. This evaluation kit demonstrates the flexibility and ease of use of EZ-Color for high-brightness LED color mixing applications and uses temperature compensation to provide consistent color. An interactive graphical interface is also included in the evaluation kit for fast color mixing via CIE charts or direct control of individual HB LEDs
