The next best choice for powering the wearable device

From smart watches to fitness trackers, wearable devices are becoming more and more popular. Take a health monitor as an example, the measured data can be displayed on a small integrated screen after processing. The data can also be transferred to other devices and connected to the smartphone via Bluetooth® Smart.

Wearable devices are small, so their components must be equally small, including rechargeable batteries. In order to allow these small-capacity batteries to run for as long as possible each time they are charged, the power management chip must not only have the smallest possible form factor, but also need to be optimized for efficiency. Integrating multiple power supplies in a single-package, multi-rail configuration can play a large role.

TI's small TPS62770 multi-rail DC/DC converter integrates low quiescent current buck and boost outputs into a single device. The step-down track enables high efficiency with extremely low 360-nA quiescent current, even within the microampere load range, to power wireless MCUs and sensors. The boost track is optimized for powering the display. The display can be either a passive matrix OLED (PMOLED) or a backlit LCD screen.

The flexibility of the display design is helpful to meet the needs of different types of wearable devices. In some cases, boost converters can be used as LED drivers with current control. For example, the TPS62770 integrated boost converter offers designers the option of adjusting the LED brightness of a large display just like the brightness adjustment in a smartphone. The brightness can be changed by using a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal to sense the duty cycle of the signal and converting the duty cycle to a forward current through the LEDs.

The combination of these features provides a more flexible design for small battery-powered applications such as healthy wearable devices. The power options that the TPS62770 converter has for powering multiple types of displays, such as PMOLEDs or LCD backlights (see Figure 2), may be the most suitable power option for your next wearable device.
