Facebook's Lab Secretly Develops Brain-Computer Interface Technology from Baidu VR

Marc Zuckerberg's dream of letting humans understand each other’s ideas through brain waves and communicate with each other may already be close to becoming a reality. A secret team that Facebook set up last year is developing "brain-computer interface" technology that sounds like telepathy in science fiction movies.

Zuckerberg Experience Oculus Rift

Facebook’s Building 8 lab recently posted several job postings describing a project involving “neurological imaging” and “electrophysiological data” with the goal of creating a “future communication platform”.

One of the jobs is a brain-machine interface engineer. The Building 8 lab hopes to recruit doctors in neuroscience to help them complete the "concept to product" process. Another job announcement sought engineers who could develop "audio signal processing algorithms" for "future communication and computing platforms."

Facebook declined to elaborate on the recruitment announcement, but its executive director Zuckerberg's statement in 2015 showed that the company is researching some sort of telepathic communication equipment based on brain control.

Zuckerberg said in a question and answer session in June 2015: “One day, I believe that we can express our rich ideas directly to each other. You just need to think about something. If you like, your friend can Experience it now."

Non-intrusive technology

Building 8 is also looking for engineers who can develop "new non-invasive neuroimaging technologies" and create "realistic and immersive tactile experiences." Neuroimaging is an advanced scientific field that uses various techniques to scan and understand what is happening in the human brain.

Facebook seems to have included relevant talent. According to LinkedIn's personal data, Mark Chevillet, head of the applied neuroscience program at Johns Hopkins University, joined Facebook last September as a "Technical Project Manager."

It is not yet clear what kind of technology may eventually allow Facebook to achieve this vision. In the past, many companies have been trying to measure certain brain signals using headbands equipped with special sensors, and Facebook may adopt a similar approach.

Such products (although there may be a long way to go) will represent a major leap forward in information processing technology, and will allow the world's largest social network Facebook to stay at the forefront of the intersection of technology and science.

From the automobile to the health care field, Google has been launching a series of ambitious “moon landing plans.” But Facebook is catching up, and in April 2016, Google’s Deputy Director of Engineering Regina Dugan was dug up. Let it lead the newly established Building 8 team.

In addition to its plans to develop consumer hardware products that can realize Facebook's vision of "connecting the world," we know very little about Building 8 information. When Dugan joined, Facebook said she will be responsible for creating "a technology that flexibly blends physical and digital worlds."

Before joining Google, Dugan was head of the US Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The recruitment notice of Building 8 describes the working environment as "DARPA style", and the employees will "work on an active and fixed schedule and make extensive use of partnerships with universities, small and large companies."

The recruitment notice for Building 8 was mentioned for two years, which shows that the department has adopted a similar approach to Google X Labs. Google X experiment strictly implements a fixed time frame to develop a product and then closes the project or strips it out as an independent business.

Building 8 has not yet officially announced any products, but these recruitment notices indicate that they have begun to roll out internal projects. In December, Facebook announced that Building 8 will cooperate with 17 universities in research projects.
